Nylon String Guitar – From Spain’s classical tradition, using nylon strings for a warm tone. Played fingerstyle or with rhythmic strumming (rasgueado), it’s central to flamenco, Latin American, and Mediterranean folk. Its softer attack makes it ideal for intricate accompaniment and expressive solo playing.
7-String Acoustic Guitar – Found in Brazilian choro and Russian folk traditions, adding a low string for extended bass and harmonic richness. It allows a single player to cover bass lines and chords simultaneously.
Cajón – A Peruvian box drum developed by Afro-Peruvian communities, now widely used in acoustic folk. Players strike different areas for bass and snare sounds.
Castanets – Spanish clappers used in flamenco and Iberian dance traditions. They articulate complex rhythmic patterns tied to dance.
Palmas – A traditional Spanish hand-clapping technique central to flamenco, rooted in Andalusia. Performed by striking the hands in different ways (sharp palmas claras or softer palmas sordas), it creates complex rhythmic patterns that align with flamenco’s compás. It serves as both a rhythmic foundation and interactive element, locking in with dancers, singers, and guitar to drive the performance.
