Quena – An Andean notch flute from Peru, Bolivia, and Ecuador, used in indigenous mountain folk music. It often plays pentatonic melodies that reflect regional musical scales.
Acoustic Bass – Acoustic bass guitars can be used in unplugged folk settings for low-end support. It blends naturally with acoustic ensembles without amplification. The Spanish influence brought many variations of guitars to South America.
Charango – An Andean lute (Bolivia/Peru), bright and high-pitched, used for rhythmic strumming in indigenous folk. It often doubles melodies with other instruments.
Tambora – A Caribbean drum used in Dominican and Colombian folk. It often combines stick and hand techniques. Important to Colombian cumbia traditions.
Alegre – A lead drum in Colombian cumbia traditions. It improvises around the main rhythm.
Llamador – A timekeeping drum in Colombian cumbia. It maintains a steady foundational pulse.
Maracas – Indigenous rattles from the Caribbean and South America, widely used in Latin folk. They create continuous rhythmic texture.
